Crash Course: A Book Review and Giveaway

Tuesday, July 15, 2014
Summer has always been a time for me to take a deep breath, relax, enjoy my family, and reflect on my teaching practices. I was so excited when I was asked to pre-read Kim Bearden's new book  Crash Course: The Lessons My Students Taught Me. In this amazing book, Kim shares her personal and professional highs and lows as an educator. After an extra exhausting and challenging school year, it was exactly what my teacher heart needed... From laughing to the next minute crying, I felt healing and restoration as I flipped through each page. Each inspirational story Kim tells is filled with honesty, heartbreak, love, faith, and humor. Simply put, this must read book renewed my love and passion for teaching! It reminded me why I became a teacher. One of the many quotes that I will always hold close to my heart was, "We all need a little magic in our lives--we need to allow ourselves to imagine, dream, to delight in a world that is full of mystical wonder." Amen! Can't wait to be a part of the magic in my classroom and the educational world this year!

Grab some tissues, and pick up your copy of the book right here! You will definitely not be disappointed!

Kim Bearden is the co-founder and executive director at the Ron Clark Academy. Most importantly, she is also the language arts teacher.

Kim has received numerous awards for her creative, dynamic, and rigorous teaching styles. She was selected from over 70,000 nominations to be honored as the Disney American Teacher Awards Outstanding Middle School Humanities Teacher. Along with countless other awards, she was also chosen from among 7,000 teachers as Teacher of the Year in Cobb County Georgia.

Over the past twenty-three years, she has been a teacher, instructional lead teacher, curriculum director, school board member, staff development trainer, and middle school principal.

For someone that has accomplished so much during her career, Kim is by far one of the most humble and down to earth educators. Her life hasn't been perfect, and I love that she is so transparent in her book as she shares her experiences as an educator.

Instead of telling you, I will just show you! Here is a little clip that shows who and what the Ron Clark Academy is all about! The best part? You can actually come spend a day…or two…at the school! Be sure and follow the Ron Clark Academy on Facebook {HERE} to receive special updates and events!

If you would like to visit RCA and participate in the RCA Educator Training Experience, visit the website {HERE} to register! It is truly a training unlike anything you have ever experienced before. During this training, you will get to meet the students of RCA and observe Ron Clark and Kim Bearden's unparalleled instruction in their 5th grade classrooms. You will also spend the day in classroom observations and workshops that will enhance your instruction in any grade level. And of course, you will end the visitation becoming "slide certified."

Guess who I had breakfast with this weekend?!? sweet friends, Kim and Megan from Kindergals! We had the best time catching up and celebrating my little bundle of joy!! One of my favorite things about blogging are the forever friendships that I've made along the way. Priceless.
We took this picture two years ago when we first met in person. SO funny to think about how nervous I was to meet THE KINDERGALS that day.  Love these sweet ladies to pieces!!

My Higher Order Thinking Reading Response Sheets got a much needed makeover last week! This packet is my #1 seller and one of my first TpT products. I just love using it to engage and encourage my students to create, evaluate, and analyze text on a deeper level. They are great {and easy} to use to differentiate your reading instruction/activities! If you have already purchased it, please go redownload for the updated file. For everyone else, you can check it out {here}. I've put it on sale for a few days:) The second edition and the complete set {editions 1 & 2} will be updated this week!

My sweet boy has been keeping me very BUSY this summer! I'm savoring every single moment with him!! From library visits to making Play-Doh rainbow cakes to spending the entire day at the pool... I just love it all!! Can't believe I only have 3 more weeks before I start another school year {very, very pregnant} and he becomes a kindergartner....WHAT?!

As you probably already know, I'm expecting a little girl in about 8 weeks. We recently had a 3D ultrasound to get a sneak peek of her preciousness. Meet our little girl...
So blessed!

Are you headed to Vegas this week for the I Teach K/1st and TpT conferences?!!? I'm so jealous that I won't be able to be there:( Can't wait to hear all about the fun and see everyone's pictures!!!
