Rewind.... The First Week of First Grade!!!

Today I'm rewinding back to the highlights of my awesome first week of school...

This year for morning work, I decided to make a little "Welcome to First Grade" coloring sheet. It kept my new first graders engaged and happy! This was especially helpful while I was running around putting away supplies, greeting parents, easing nerves, drying tears {not mine;)}, taking attendance, lunch count, etc.
You can download it {here}.
The kids loved getting to know me right away with my All About Mrs. Brantley slideshow! Afterwards, I gave them their first true/false quiz..all about me!

"Grab a Question" was a big hit to help us get to know each other! I put these different questions in a bucket for students to pull out one at a time & answer! Easy and fun icebreaker activity!! You can download it {here}.

We read First Day Jitters and made delicious Jitter Juice. You can grab Jitter Juice activities from Abby's Fun with Firsties packet!!

I read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. This was a great book to talk about treating each other respectfully, how to be a good friend, etc. We also did a ton of name activities- sharing why our names are special, name puzzles, graphing the letters in our name, and....

"Rainbow Names" from  Deanna's Literacy & Math Fun with Names unit was a blast!

We also made our precious "All About Me" paper dolls from The Teacher Wife's Back to School packet!! Love, love, love them!!!

We brainstormed what we need to do for everyone to have the best school year. Then we created our classroom guidelines. We discussed what each guideline would look and sound like in our classroom/school! This process is based from Positive Discipline in the Classroom.

We started learning Read to Self procedures & building our stamina. Seriously, I'm so proud of how hard my sweet readers are working! They are rockin' the Daily 5!!

We didn't waste a minute learning problem solving strategies and math journal procedures! I'll have a separate post coming soon all about math journaling. You can check out the math journal prompts I use {here}!

As you can see, we were busy, busy the first week of school! I'm one happy and EXHAUSTED teacher....Can't wait for the 3 day weekend to finally get some much needed rest!!

Looks lots of fun in your room during the first week! We're just half way through our first week now and are also excitedly looking forward to three day weekend - so we can sleep! Have a good rest of the week!

I just purchased your math journal prompts and look forward to your upcoming post about math journaling! This will be my first time trying this out, so I'd love to know some of your strategies.
