It's a challenge to explain how I manage my centers. It's one of those things where you really have to be there to completely understand how it works. However, I'm not going to let that hold me back from sharing what I can with all of you! Here it goes.....

This is my center board. Students go to the board to see what they need to work on each day. We work on centers Mon.-Thurs. for about 1.5 hours. If needed, Friday is our day to continue working on centers. When students have completed all of their center work, they get to have "Free Friday". This is a time when they can play a math or literacy game of their choice.

As you can see, I have four center group posters above the centers (on the fish). I move the group posters each day. I use push pins to hang them up so I can easily move them around the board. However, I think next year I'm going to use some sort of clip instead!

Students might go to a center more than once a week depending on how many activities are in the center. For example, the red fish on the board is my math/science/social studies center. During the week, students will have 3 opportunities to work on the 3-4 activities in that center.

Here is a list of all of the centers in my classroom:

-Math, Science/Social Studies

-Listening/Reading Response Station

-Pocket Chart

-HOTS (Higher Order Thinking)

I'm very lucky to have these amazing wooden shelves to store my center materials. This shelf is sectioned off by skill, spelling, and math/ social studies/science centers. Did I mention how much I love this shelf?!?!

Here is a picture of my listening station! I actually have two of these to accommodate more students. Nothing spectacular, but does the trick!

Here is a picture of the pocket chart center. Again, very simple-just a pocket chart on a stand!! I have a little basket on the floor beside it that holds the recording sheets. I love using this pocket chart for sorting, making words, and matching games!!!

Here's a pic of one of my kiddos at the computer center. He is working on his math facts using a program my school purchased called "Math Facts in a Flash". It's great for practicing math fact fluency!!

This is my HOTS center!I ran out of room to put things so I made a pocket with a file folder, labeled it, and hot glued it to the side of my desk!! I put activities in the pocket that promote higher order thinking in reading and writing. This week, my students are working on an activity on their "Think Dots" board. A TpT HOTS center packet is on my summer project list!!

Everyone has a center folder to help them stay organized. One side is for completed work and the other is for incomplete work. My little loves keep up with what they've completed using a center checklist. The checklist is a wonderful tool! It keeps everyone on track & allows me to open a folder and immediately see what a student is working on. It did take a good couple of weeks at the beginning of the year to train them to use the checklists, but now they are center checklist pros!!

I meet with my leveled reading groups at this lil' table while everyone's working on their centers. I also have a parapro or parent volunteer working with students at this time.

I stole this idea from my super organized team member...I use labeled expandable file folder pockets to store all of my center cards and recording sheets. L.O.V.E this!

Whew! I know I probably just confused the heck outta ya! If so, I apologize!! Please let me know if you have any questions in the comment section!!

The Easter Egg

I love anything by Jan Brett! She is one of my favorite authors!! I was so fortunate to receive a copy of her book, The Easter Egg, from a student during our book fair!! Too sweet, huh?!?! If you haven't read it, it's a story about an adorable bunny named Hoppi who can't decide how to decorate his Easter egg. If Hoppi wins the Easter egg contest, he'll get to help the Easter Bunny deliver eggs. Hoppi discovers that it isn't easy and gets discouraged. He goes into the woods to think when a blue robin egg falls out of a tree. He keeps the egg safe and warm until the baby bird hatches, and when the Easter Bunny arrives, he chooses the empty blue robin egg as the winner to reward Hoppi for his kindness. A.W.E.S.O.M.E!!

After I read this sweet story, my students decorated their own egg. I just cut eggs out of white construction paper and put every crafty thing out for my students to use to decorate them-glitter, pom poms, sequins, ribbon, etc. Fun stuff!!!

Then students used this writing paper to write about their egg!! Click on the picture to download it!

I thought they turned out super cute!

Hope y'all are doing well! I'm on a mission to post how I manage my centers next....

Hoppin' into Centers

We are back from Spring Break and have hopped right into our spring/Easter themed centers. My students are having so much fun learning with the flowers, chicks, and bunny activities!!!

Check them out..........

Chunking Chicks

Students take these chick cards and use the chunks to make words!! This is a great phonics center!! I'm so proud of how well my my students are doing with this activity!! YAY! You can get this in my Spring Math and Literacy Packet!

Check out this ginormous egg container I found at the Dollar Tree to store my springy center cards in. I won't tell you how many I bought...

Read the Room- /ir/, /ur/, and/er/
We are a Read the Room lovin' class! It's such a fun activity to reinforce the phonics chunks (we use Phonics Dance) we learn in class. This Read the Room is on ir, ur, and er. I tape them all over the walls and students go on a word search. After they read the word, they sort them on their recording sheet! You can get this in my Spring Math and Literacy Center Packet!

Hop into a Sentence

My kiddos had to unscramble the words to make a sentence in this literacy center. The cards are color coded so they know which words will make a sentence! They wrote all of the sentences they made on their recording sheet. You can get this center in my Hippity Hoppity Math and Literacy Packet!

Making Words with Springtime

In this literacy center, students move the eggs around in the pocket chart to make words using the letters in the word Springtime!! Fun stuff!!! This is a classroom favorite and it's so easy to prepare!! You can get this making words center in my Spring Math and Literacy Packet.

Rabbit Time

Students match the analog clock to the digital clock in this math center. This has been a great activity to review telling time to the hour and half hour. You can get this center in my Spring Math and Literacy Center Packet.

You can get 15% off both my Hippity Hoppity Math and Literacy Center Packet and Spring Math and Literacy Center Packet on TpT through tomorrow! Together they'll give you about 2-3 weeks worth of centers(22 centers), which is perfect for the rest of April!!! I like to sell my centers in packets because you'd spend a fortune buying them individually for $2-$3 each. One of my packets (10-12 centers) usually cost $8.00, but with the 15% discount, they are only $6.80!! All of the centers come with a recording sheet. These are great to keep your students accountable for completing their work & seeing who does or doesn't understand a concept!!

A lot of AWESOME followers have asked how I manage my centers/centertime! It's hard to explain without you seeing it in action, but I'm going to do my best to share what I do in my next post using a ton of pictures!! Until then.....

Have a wonderful evening!!

Hey friends! I love those cheapO plastic eggs that are everywhere right now. Lately, I've been trying to brainstorm ways to use them that I've never used before. Here's what I came up with...... This math center is called "EGGcellent Number Match"! My spring sweeties will match the number clues to the correct number. To make this for your class, you'll need 10 plastic eggs. I would make sure to have some of the same color to make it more challenging. All you do is write a number (I use a paint pen)on the smallest side of the egg and the clues on the largest. Break them apart, put them in a basket, and you're ready to go!! I used a variety of different clues for my eggs.

Here is recording sheet that goes with this fun activity. Just click on the picture to download it!

This literacy center is called "Eggtraordinary Endings" and focuses on making words with inflectional endings. To make this center, you will need 10 plastic eggs. Write a root word on the largest side and an inflectional ending on the other smaller side.Break them apart, put them in a basket, and your students can have a blast making words.

Here is a recording sheet you can use with this center! Click on the picture to download it!!

Hope you enjoy these activities!!!! Don't forget to enter the "Spring Themed Fun" contest if you haven't already!!! Only two days left before the winners are announced!!!Happy Friday Eve!!!!

Goal Setting

Hey Blogger Friends! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday evening. I have a little free time since my little man decided to crash at 6:00!! Poor little boy has a stomach bug:(

I am so excited to have 200 followers!!! Wooooohooooo!!! Thank y'all so much for being a part of my blog!!! Make sure to enter into the "Spring Theme Fun" contest that I'm hosting with Erica Bohrer!!! The contest ends on Saturday, April 9th at midnight. You have 5 chances to win on both blogs!!!

Now onto goal setting!! It's a huge focus at my school. I have seen the wonderful benefits of it in my classroom. It's a life skill that your kiddos will always use! At the beginning of each week, I pass out a behavior and learning goal sheet for my little goal setters to complete. Then they take it home to share with their family. When they bring their goal sheet back to school, you can either display them in your classroom or have them keep it in a safe place! At the end of the week, we discuss whether they met their goal or need to continue working towards it during the following week!

I just gave my learning and behavior goal sheet a much needed makeover and wanted to share it with you. You can click on the picture to download it. It's very simple, but I wanted to keep it short and sweet!!!

FYI- Teachers pay Teachers is giving everyone 10% off of their purchases through April 9th with the coupon code A3F9D. Stop by my store, as well as others to take advantage of this awesome discount!!! I should be done with my "Fun in the Sun Math and Literacy Center Packet" in a few days:) It will include 10 centers that are full of sunshine!!!

I'm finally on Spring Break!! YAY!!! Most of it will be dedicated to grad school work, but I'm okay with not having to juggle it with a full-time job for a week!!! Exciting, huh?!?!?

Hope you have a GREAT week!!!

Mystery Words Center

Look at the cuties I picked up at The Dollar Tree!!! Can you tell I shop there frequently?!?! They have the best holiday themed stuff for centers. I used these fantastic chick and carrot eggs to store letter tiles for my "Bunny's Mystery Words" center. I put letters in each egg that my kiddos have to unscramble to reveal the Easter/spring themed mystery word. Fun stuff!!!! I made the letter tiles in the pictures, but you could always use your own tiles as long as they are small enough. If you want to have the letter tiles shown in the pictures, you can swing by my TpT store and pick them up in my Hippity Hoppity Center Packet. It is 1 out of the 10 bunny themed centers in the packet!!

1st Grade Chicks and Bunny Shakers

Interesting title, huh?!?! I'll explain.....

We have new 1st grade friends on our hall!!! My team member had a parent bring in an incubator full of eggs and look at the preciousness that hatched out of them!!! This is the first one that hatched on Monday & two more hatched today!!! So much fun...they are TOO cute!!! I'm in L.O.V.E....seriously!!!

Now onto the "Bunny Shakers"!!! Aren't these so sweet!?!?! I saw them at the Dollar Tree and immediately thought "DICE SHAKERS"!!! YAY!!! I love a good ole' day at the Dollar Tree. I can't wait to use them with my Spring and Hippity Hoppity Math and Literacy Centers!!! It's worth checking out your nearby $Tree to see if they are available!!!

I made an addition and subtraction recording sheet to go along with these adorable bunny shakers. Students make addition and/or subtraction number sentences with the numbers on the dice. Click on the pictures to download them!!!
